Job Title: Community Food Support Coordinator

Hours of Work: Full-Time (35 hours/week), Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–4:30 PM
Salary: $26.00/hour ($47,320 annually)
Job Type: Contract, August 1, 2025 – July 30, 2026

Position Summary:

Family SOS is seeking a passionate and organized coordinator with experience in food programming and/or neighbourhood-based community organizing. The Community Food Support Coordinator will lead and oversee all aspects of Family SOS’s food security initiatives aimed at improving access to nutritious food for vulnerable populations. This role includes supervising staff and volunteers, managing resources, coordinating with community partners, and ensuring smooth and safe program operations.

Current food security initiatives include:

  • Community Market (Food Bank): Fridays, year-round

  • Lunchbox Project: Tuesdays - Thursdays, September to June

  • Community Garden Projects: June to August

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement food security programs, policies, and procedures in collaboration with the Executive Director.

  • Coordinate and organize use of food-related spaces, including scheduling, liaising with external partners, and ensuring safe operations.

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and support staff and volunteers involved in the Community Market, food workshops, and community garden.

  • Manage food donations and inventory, including pick-ups from Second Harvest and ordering from suppliers, in alignment with budget guidelines.

  • Lead the Lunchbox Project:

    • Collaborate with the Cook to plan menus

    • Purchase food and supplies within budget

    • Coordinate and deliver meals to schools

  • Supervise the Community Garden Project: 

    • Oversee the Community Garden Coordinator

    • Recruit and schedule volunteers

    • Manage summer programming in the garden

  • Develop and implement tools to evaluate program impact, including community surveys.

  • Maintain detailed records and prepare reports on program activities.

  • Conduct outreach and education on Family SOS’s food security programs.

  • Manage program budgets and ensure alignment with funding requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or degree in Social Services, Nutrition, Social Work, Community Development, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in food security, community development, or similar areas.

  • Experience supervising staff or coordinating volunteers.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Understanding of food systems and food security challenges in the local context.

  • Experience working with communities experiencing social barriers and an ability to demonstrate cultural sensitivity and awareness.

  • Required Certifications:

    • Driver’s License

    • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search

    • First Aid/CPR

    • Food Safety

      Working Conditions:

  • In-person position based in Spryfield, Nova Scotia.

  • Work takes place in both office and community settings, including outdoors in the garden and during food deliveries.

  • Must be able to lift 25-50 pounds.

  • Local travel required; access to a company vehicle will be provided.
